Traditional Timber Frame

Open Panel Timber Frame

The Most common type of timber frame at the moment is the open panel system although closed panel systems are becoming increasingly popular. Whichever method you choose, the timber frame remains the means of the structural support of the building with the frame being a precision engineered structure that is remarkably strong and durable.

  • The open panel system involves the frame being covered internally by plasterboard and filled with high performance insulation such as ‘Warmcel’.
  • A moisture/vapour barrier is incorporated and the outer leaf can be constructed of render, stone, brick or timber clad. The outer leaf is then tied to the timber frame by varying methods dependant upon the type of outer leaf chosen.

The following pictures help show the process:

Midas DSC002. This home has had the roof sarked and you can see the vertical external battening on the outside of the blue breather membrane which has been installed to take the render carrier mesh.

Corsham 023 and Corsham 009. These show the blue breather membrane paper which acts as the moisture vapour barrier. This allows our frame to breathe but ensures no water is able to penetrate the frame. You can then see that these buildings have stonework as their outer leaf.

Midas DSC 0012. This shows a render carrier system in use. As you can see the render carrier is a welded wire reinforcing mesh which spans between studs. Render is then applied.

Tregadillet DSC 0074 and DSC 0075. These show the block work nearing completion and the walls rendered over the block work on the right-hand sided building.

We currently supply all of our frames as the open panel system, however we are developing our own closed panel system so watch this space………

Internal walls go up first Roof joists stabilise the structure ready for the next story Breathable membrane seperates Timber frame from traditional brick/block exteriors Second floor goes up together with the roof joists. Traditional approach does not have to mean a boring building. Houses can be of any design due to the flexibility of timber frame Semi detached houses are no problem with the latest timber frame Traditional style building made with modern timber frame technology and up to date insulation
